To honour the celebration of International Women's Day, we had a chance to interview a few of our BOSS LADIES in the fashion & entertainment industry. Here is our highlight story of the African Entertainment Award Canada nominee artist/ entrepreneur Amanie Illfated.
When did you start singing?
I started singing when I was about 4 years old. I saw Celine Dion singing on CBC Television while I was playing and immediately knew that was what I wanted to do.
Who inspired you musically?
The artists that inspired me the most are Celine Dion and Yondo Sister by sparking the whole Pop/African fusion. Later on in life, I got really inspired by M.I.A, Nelly Furtado, and Phantogram.
What is the inspiration behind your latest single?
My most recently released single, 'You & Me' was inspired by love and how exciting it is to be with someone you genuinely love with all your heart. I also have a new single released in the coming weeks called 'The Hills,' which I dedicated to my father. It is about the racial and social struggles immigrants and refugees face when coming to North America.
What can we expect from you in the next 2 years or so?
I will be releasing an album called 'Saturn' in the coming months, with nine tracks. This album will contain video and photographic images added to the narrative of a young first-generation refugee female's struggles in North America. This will also be followed by a North American tour which includes stops in Regina, Montreal, New York City, Chicago, and Boston.
I'm looking forward to releasing even more music in the years to come.
What are other talented artists you'd like to collaborate with?
I would be absolutely humbled if I could collaborate with Phantogram, K'Naan, Kendrick Lamar and M.I.A... preferably on the same album!
